Bad battery charging on 1,9 diesel

Saab 9-3 (9440) with 1,9 diesel engine

This is valid specially for DT/DTH model year 2008-2009, but this issue can exist also on DTR and other model years.

Important: Do not replace the alternator as first measure.

The battery positive pole clamp can be bad crimped to the cable. Common symptoms are:

  • The battery is not charged OK
  • The battery positive pole clamp and cable is getting very hot. The cable insulation close to the pole clamp has melted.
  • The new alternator has also broken down
  • The diode bridge in the Denso alternator is broken. The diode bridge in the Bosch alternator does usually not break down due to this cable fault.

Action:

1. Replace the engine wiring harness. The positive battery cable is included in the engine wiring and is not a separate spare part.

2. An easier way is to replace the battery pole clamp. Cut off the cable as close as possible to the old clamp. Use shrink tube to repair damaged cable insulation. Use a standard pole clamp and crimp it securely to the cable.

3. Check that the alternator is working OK. Replace it if necessary.
